Principles of Lower limb Orthoses The orthosis selected should be simple, lightweight, strong, durable, and cosmetically acceptable. Principles of Lower limb Orthoses Use only as indicated and for as long as necessary. Allow joint movement wherever possible and appropriate. Orthosis should be functional throughout all phases of gait. Orthotic ankle joint should be centered over tip of medialmalleolus. Orthotic knee joint should be centered over prominence of medial femoral condyle. Orthotic hip joint should be in a position that allows patient to sit upright at 90 degrees. three-point system   MATERIALS An orthosis can be constructed from metal, plastic, leather, synthetic fabrics, or any combination.
