Design
A lower limb orthosis is an external device applied or attached to a lower body segment
To improve
function by controlling motion
providing support through stabilizing gait
reducing pain through transferring load to another area
correcting flexible deformities
preventing progression of fixed deformities.
Principles of Lower limb Orthoses
The orthosis selected should be
simple, lightweight, strong, durable, and cosmetically acceptable.

Use only as indicated and for as long as necessary.
Allow joint movement wherever possible and appropriate.
Orthosis should be functional throughout all phases of gait.
Orthotic ankle joint should be centered over tip of medialmalleolus.
Orthotic knee joint should be centered over prominence of medial femoral condyle.
Orthotic hip joint should be in a position that allows patient to sit upright at 90 degrees.
